I’d never tried a wine from Thailand, but there it was in the SAS lounge at Heathrow. ‘Monsoon Valley 2548 rose’ it said, 12.5 percent. It was a blend of Malaga blanc and Podkum grapes (never heard of them, m’lud). The description on the label said it was from the ‘amazing floating vineyards North of the Gulf of Thailand in the Chao Phraya Delta.’ It also said to look out for the tastes of watermelon and mango. I tried it.
Wow! It was dry. ‘Dry as chips’ as a colleague says. It could be the way to remove sticky labels, I thought. But it grew on me as my taste-buds got used to it. I warmed to it, in fact. With taramasalata it was just right. And I think it might be good with spicy seafood. Another first.
