Marmalade Café, Los Angeles

Breakfast of chumpions

This is the breakfast I had on Sunday at Marmalade, one of my favourite breakfast places (there are so many) in Los Angeles. Jet lag was on my side when I woke up at 6.30AM, so I went for a jog and a swim and then rewarded myself with this spread.

One of my favourite things about LA is that no one bats an eyelid if you ask for your food prepared differently than the menu specifies. For example, I didn’t want any milk or cream or butter or oil used to cook my eggs. Not a problem! I didn’t want toast. So I substituted cottage cheese! I didn’t want potatoes. They gave me fruit! Plus the re-fills on soft drinks are free and plenty, and you get a glass of ice water as soon as you sit down. And when my eggs didn’t seem quite hot enough? The waiter gasped in horror, apologised profusely, whisked them away and brought me a fresh, piping hot plate. Toto, we’re not in London anymore.
