Sunday brunch

Not just Cambridge, but the UK as a whole is short of places that do a good Sunday brunch. It’s a meal Americans do really well, and the best examples in the UK seem to be American restaurants in London. However, the Cambridge Chop House has added Sunday brunch to its repertoire. It’s not a buffet, but does a great selection of dishes including eggs Benedict, poached eggs and black pudding, and a full English breakfast with everything (“the full Monty”). It also offers bloody Marys and buck’s fizz (mimosa).

I tried the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. The toast was very lightly done, hardly browned at all, and the eggs mixed with pieces of smoked salmon, cream, pepper and salt “and much love.” It was very tasty indeed, with a nice texture and peppery watercress alongside for contrast. With it I had a buck’s fizz to start with, then a half pint of Pegasus ale (4.1 percent).
