The Ebury in Pimlico Road

It’s stylish with a young crowd and good food. It’s somewhat pricey, but worth it. I had pheasant and pheasant! I began with pheasant confit, described as a raviolo with celeriac purée, but in fact a small sphere of delicious minced pheasant with spices and (I think) cereal. Then I went on to roast breast of pheasant (“we serve it pink here”) with carrot purée and creamed cabbage (pictured – sorry it’s dark; the flash didn’t want to work). Very nice and agreeably tough and gamey.

My companions started with soft poached egg with sautéed mushroom and brioche, and with goat’s cheese mousse with beetroot purée and pea shoots (pictured). They really are fond of their purées here! One had roast cod with mashed potatoes, leek fondue and chive velouté, the other had the spiced pork belly with mashed potatoes, sautéed black pudding and star anise.

The wines were a Seresin NZ Marlborough sauvignon blanc ay 13.5 percent, and a South African shiraz/cabernet whose name I forget. Both were nice, and though the NZ cost twice as much as the SA, it wasn’t twice as good. They both went well with the food, which we all rated quite highly.
